PhD Opportunity – Wetland Science

posted 8 Jun 2014, 09:43 by Valerie McCarthy

I have an opportunity for a suitable qualified candidate under DkIT's PhD Collaborative Research Programme and will be conducted in collaboration with the School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Queen’s University of Belfast. The project will examine factors influencing the transport of nutrients to wetlands, and the processes which occur within wetland systems that influence nutrient dynamics, ecosystem functioning, and habitat resilience. In particular, the inter-relationships between carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles as influenced by both external and internal drivers will be examined. Further details can be found here [link]. Closing date for applications is 21st of June 2014.

GLEON 14

posted 14 Oct 2012, 10:53 by Valerie McCarthy   [ updated 14 Oct 2012, 10:55 ]

This week I will be helping organise as well as attending GLEON14, which will occur in Mulranny, Co. Mayo. GLEON (Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network) is a grassroots network of limnologists, ecologists, information technology experts, and engineers who have a common goal of building a scalable, persistent network of lake ecology observatories. Data from these observatories will allow us to better understand key processes such as the effects of climate and landuse change on lake function, the role of episodic events such as typhoons in resetting lake dynamics, and carbon cycling within lakes.

The Domestic Wastewater Treatment & Disposal Systems Conference was held in TCD on the 10 - 11 September 2012. The Conference brought together over 200 delegates including a mixture of academics, representatives from Government Agencies and Local Authorities, and those working in the on-site wastewater treatment industry.  I have uploaded my presentation from the event to slideshare [link], while other presentations from the event are available from the EPA website [link]

PhD position in wetland ecology

posted 1 Aug 2012, 05:07 by Valerie McCarthy   [ updated 2 Aug 2012, 03:53 ]

I have an opportunity for a suitable qualified candidate under DkIT's PhD Collaborative Research Programme investigating the hydrology, ecology and ecosystem function of small lake ecosystems in upland blanket bog catchments. This project aims to examine the similarities and differences in biological and abiotic processes on the functioning of small lake and pool systems in both natural and cutover blanket bog habitats and compare their hydrology and ecology. In particular, the inter-relationships between carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles as influenced by both external and internal drivers will be examined. Further details can be found here [link]. Closing date for applications is 10th of August.
